Азербайджан – страна, расположенная на стыке Востока и Запада, важнейший исторический пункт Великого Шелкового Пути, испокон веков был открыт для торговцев и путешественников со всего света. Караваны, груженные шелками, пряностями, золотом и жемчугами, пересекали страну, направляясь из Европы в Восточные земли и обратно. В Азербайджане бывал известный английский путешественник и купец Энтони Дженкинсон (XVI век), во время своего «хождения за три моря» сюда заезжал русский путешественник тверской купец Афанасий Никитин (XV век), а в веке XIX страну вдоль и поперек изъездил знаменитый писатель и путешественник Александр Дюма.

Неудивительно, что богатое историческое, культурное и природное наследие привлекают сегодня в Азербайджан миллионы туристов из многих стран мира. Теплое Каспийское море, мягкий климат и нетронутая природа составляют основу развития в стране пляжного, активного и охотничьего видов туризма.

Обилие минеральных источников, наличие соляных пещер и единственное в мире месторождение лечебной нефти – Нафталан, способствуют формированию в Азербайджане лечебного туризма. Неповторимая архитектура, самобытная культура, разнообразная национальная кухня влекут в страну почитателей исторического, этнографического и гастрономического туризма. А вокруг одного из основных жанров азербайджанской традиционной музыки – мугама, объявленного ЮНЕСКО шедевром устного и нематериального культурного наследия человечества, даже сформировалось новое направление туризма – мугам-туры.

В летний период весьма распространены экологические туры в Азербайджан, которые включают посещение природных заповедников, треккинг и охотничьи маршруты. Их с легкостью можно совместить с этнографическими турами в самобытное селение Хыналыг Губинского района, где сохранился традиционный уклад жизни или в поселок Лагыч в Исмаиллы, прославившийся со времен средневековья изготовлением холодного оружия и медной утвари.

Будучи в столице государства – Баку, туристы непременно стараются попасть в историко-архитектурный заповедник «Ичери шехер», который, вместе с расположенным здесь великолепным Дворцом Ширваншахов и Девичьей башней входит в список Всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО.

Азербайджан превратился в центр туризма в регионе. В стране ежегодно проходит крупнейшая Международная выставка «Туризм и Путешествия» AITF, собирающая сотни представителей отрасли и национальные стенды многих стран мира.

Среди наиболее популярных столичных гостиниц можно назвать сетевые брендовые отели – Four Seasons Hotel Baku, Hilton Baku, Hyatt Regency, JW Marriott Absheron Baku Hotel, Jumeirah Bilgah Beach Hotel, Grand Hotel Europe, Hilton Baku, Kempinski Hotel Badamdar и др.
